Kara Clark

Partner, Actuarial

Kara is a Partner in the Chicago Health office of Oliver Wyman Actuarial Consulting, Inc., where she provides consulting services to health insurance companies, healthcare providers, and regulatory agencies.  She joined Oliver Wyman in January 2019 with over 25 years of experience in the healthcare industry in a diverse range of roles serving corporate, association, and consulting organizations.

Relevant Experience

At Oliver Wyman, Kara has provided payers with analytics and financial modeling to assess NewCo strategic initiatives, new market entry, value-based contract opportunities and outcomes, and utilization management programs. Recently she has been involved with payers, providers and enablement companies in assessing the strategic and financial attractiveness of the CMMI Direct Contracting models.

Previously, Kara led a multidisciplinary team within Walgreens’ Clinical Office in providing actuarial and analytic support, outcomes research, and client reporting as a corporate shared service to multiple business units, including retail and specialty pharmacy, global benefits, and worksite health.  In that role, she provided actuarial expertise for new healthcare initiatives including multiple Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organizations, including conducting opportunity analyses, providing financial projections, designing membership, utilization and cost management reporting, creating care management program analytics, supporting successful clinical quality measure reporting, and providing Board-level communications.

Kara also provided actuarial leadership for the clinical components of pay-for-performance retail pharmacy contracts, including program design, performance measurement and forecasting, identification of performance risks and opportunities, and designing and implementing predictive and other advanced analytics to support patient-based care and operational efficiency in pharmacy-based programs.

Her personal experience includes:

Health plan pricing for the Individual, Small Group and Medicare Supplement markets.

Design of healthcare analytics including cost, utilization, and risk adjustment benchmarking.

Pay-for-performance and risk-sharing program evaluation and management.

Design of care management program outcomes evaluations and studies.

Design and delivery of client reporting on utilization, care management activities, trends, and clinical and financial outcomes.

Design and management of competitive and cost-effective employee benefits strategies and programs.

Reserving, financial reporting and actuarial appraisals for health plans.

Education and Other Experience

Kara holds a MBA in MBA Health Industry Management and Management & Organizations from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a BA in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
